Home urinary tract infection (UTI) test kits use a dipstick that changes colour when certain substances are found in urine. They can help confirm a suspected UTI quickly, though they don’t replace a proper medical diagnosis in all cases. For recurrent or complicated infections, or if you have any concerning symptoms, a proper GP or pharmacist assessment is still important.

What Home UTI Tests Detect
Most home test strips check for two things in urine:

| Nitrites | Produced when certain bacteria break down urine components |
A positive test for both strongly suggests a UTI. A positive test for only one is less certain.
How to Use a Home UTI Test
- Collect a midstream urine sample in a clean container
- Dip the test strip for the specified time (usually a few seconds)
- Wait the recommended time for the colour change
- Compare the colours on the strip to the chart on the packet
- Read the result promptly — waiting too long can give false results
When to Test at Home
- You have typical UTI symptoms — burning when urinating, frequent urgency, cloudy urine
- You want quick confirmation before contacting a clinician
- You have recurring UTIs and your GP has approved home testing
When to See a Doctor Anyway
- Fever, chills or back pain — could indicate kidney infection
- Blood in urine
- Pregnancy — all suspected UTIs in pregnancy need medical review
- Men with UTI symptoms — UTIs are less common in men and need assessment
- Children
- Recurrent UTIs (more than 3 in a year)
- Symptoms not settling after treatment
- Diabetes or other chronic health conditions
Limitations of Home Tests
- Not all UTIs show positive nitrites — some bacteria don’t produce them
- Contamination from the skin or vagina can give false positives
- A negative test doesn’t completely rule out infection if symptoms are present
- Home tests don’t identify which bacteria or which antibiotic will work
Treatment
If a UTI is confirmed, treatment is usually:
- A short course of antibiotics (usually 3 days for women, longer for men)
- Plenty of fluids
- Paracetamol for discomfort
Since 2018, community pharmacists in parts of the UK can supply antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs in women without a GP appointment through the NHS Pharmacy First scheme.
